The GTU's Center for the Arts & Religion is pleased to offer a tuition scholarship of $10,000 per year for two consecutive years to a PhD student at the GTU who will focus on the visual and material cultures of religion and/or a project at the intersection of religion and literature. Grants & Writing Prize

The Center for the Arts & Religion is pleased to offer grants (up to $2,000) in support of projects that center on religion & the arts. Projects might include travel to a conference to present a paper or to conduct research, funding to assist with an art workshop, or fees related to a theatrical performance. Elizabeth S. Peña, Director, is a museum professional and arts administrator, whose experience includes teaching graduate-level Museum Studies courses at the University of San Francisco and John F. Kennedy University and serving as a consultant for a wide variety of museum projects. History of the Asia Project

The Asia Project has been evolving from more than a decades’ efforts for an effective engagement with Asian contexts and cultures in the theological education, research and leadership development of faith communities at the GTU.  In 1999, a faculty working group reviewed related educational initiatives within the GTU and eventually led to the “Asian Theologies and Perspectives in North American Theological Education” project, funded by a 3-year grant of $750,000 from Henry Luce Foundation since 2004 and another subsequent grant of $500,000.  In collaboration with United Board for Christian...

Art Loan Program

While CARe is not primarily a collecting institution, it does hold a small collection of 24 artworks. They range broadly in terms of artistic medium, technique, and theme. Several important artists are represented in the collection, including Rembrandt, Chagall, and Rouault. CARe often provides art loans to GTU consortium members and other institutions. The GTU is grateful to Lanier Graham, a professional curator, professor of museum studies and world religions, and president of the Institute for Aesthetic Development, for his generous gift of the sacred that makes up the GTU Collection of Sacred World Art. Asia Project - Resources

Regional Consultations Pilot theological workshops to develop “base” theological communities and to engage theologians throughout Asia to share their visions of theological education were held in Singapore, Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, India, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan, and American Samoa between 2005 and 2007. ResoNation: Sacred Sounds Beyond Borders

On September 21-22, 2019, the Graduate Theological Union hosted ResoNation: Sacred Sounds Beyond Borders, Berkeley's first sacred world music festival, presenting music that celebrates and heals the human spirit, transcends borders, and engages the whole person and wider community. The inaugural festival in 2019 featured an evening concert Saturday, September 21 in the Pacific School of Religion (PSR) Chapel, and a free community music day for all ages on the PSR campus Sunday, September 22.
