Paula K. R. Arai

Steeped in ethnographic research, Arai takes an embodied approach to her work and finds poetic immersive storytelling a potent medium for conveying the experiences of transformative healing she researches. Specializing in Japanese Sōtō Zen Buddhist women, Arai trained under the tutelage of Aoyama Shundō Rōshi at the Aichi Senmon Nisōdō nunnery in Nagoya and maintains decades-long relationships with her laywomen consociates in Japan. Call for Papers – 2021 Virtual Graduate Student Symposium

The Institute of Buddhist Studies is delighted to announce the Graduate Student Symposium for the fall of 2021. The IBS Symposium will be held virtually on October 22nd, 2021. Rev. Dr. Takashi Miyaji

Rev. Dr. Takashi Miyaji has been a minister since 2014 and currently works as a part-time minister at the Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church in Union City, CA. In addition, he teaches as an assistant professor at the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, California since September of 2020.

Nancy G. Lin

Nancy Lin joined the faculty in 2021 after previously teaching at Vanderbilt University, Dartmouth College, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research focuses on how literary and visual cultures have shaped Buddhist traditions of Tibet and the Himalaya. Her current book project is a study of worldly Buddhists and courtly cultures of Tibet in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Her teaching emphasizes how people draw from the resources of their historical and living traditions, including rituals, narratives, values, objects, environments, and cosmologies.

Former Bishop Rev. Dr. Seigen Haruo Yamaoka had never planned on his amazing path — which has now nearly spanned 60 years — with the Buddhist Churches of America. 2021 IBS Graduation and Commencement

On Friday, May 21, faculty, students, trustees, and friends of the Institute of Buddhist Studies gathered online to celebrate the graduating class of 2021, along with the class of 2020, who was not able to celebrate last year due to the pandemic. Certificate in Soto Zen Buddhist Studies Now Offered Online

For the last five years, the Institute of Buddhist Studies has offered the Certificate in Sōtō Zen Buddhist Studies, a six course survey of Sōtō Zen history and texts. Starting this Spring 2021, the certificate program has been officially approved by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) to operate fully online.
