The Flora Lamson Hewlett Library at 35 Years: Celebrating, Remembering, and Preparing for the Future

Celebrating: A Name to Be Proud Of  Thirty-five years ago, a landmark event took place in North Berkeley. Dr. Deidre N. Green Named Assistant Professor of Latter-day Saints/Mormon Studies at the GTU

BERKELEY, CA – April 27, 2022 – The Graduate Theological Union is pleased to announce that Dr. Deidre N. Green has been named Assistant Professor of Latter-day Saints/Mormon Studies at the GTU. Dr. Green will join the faculty on July 1, 2022, and she will begin offering courses in the Fall 2022 semester. We are pleased to announce the recipients of 2022 summer research grants for GTU students working on interreligious projects related to Judaism and/or Islam. Please see the list of distinguished students and their projects below. We would like to thank the Walter & Elise Haas Fund for their generous support of this program, which has made these research projects possible as part of a multi-faceted $75,000 grant to the GTU in support of the Madrasa-Midrasha Program, a collaborative interreligious effort of the Center for Islamic Studies and the Richard S. Summer Programs

The Madrasa-Midrasha Summer Program 2025 is pleased to offer GTU students scholarship support for language study in Hebrew or Arabic this summer. The Jewish studies component will feature the modern Hebrew language intensive at the GTU organized by the Richard S. Dinner Center for Jewish Studies. The course will meet July 7th through July 25th. The course will be taught at the intermediate level, and participants must be able to read Hebrew and work their way through a basic Hebrew text. Remembering Rev. Dr. Harry C. Cronin, C.S.C.

The Rev. Dr. Harry C. Cronin, C.S.C., died on April 7, 2022, at the age of 86. An author, playwright, and Director of Berkeley's Holy Cross Center, Father Cronin worked in Berkeley from 1998 to 2000, where he taught at the Graduate Theological Union.  Born in Denver in 1935, Father Cronin graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. In 1962, he earned a Master of Arts in Theology from Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., and he was ordained a Holy Cross priest of that same year. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Theatre Arts from the...

Remembering Dr. Norman K. Gottwald

The Rev. Dr. Norman K. Gottwald, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, died on March 11, at the age of 95. Dr. Gottwald was an Old Testament scholar who pioneered the use of social theory and method in biblical studies. He was known worldwide for his teaching and writing, most notably, The Tribes of Yahweh: A Sociology of the Religion of Liberated Israel, 1250-1050 B.C.E. Remembering Professor Emeritus Louis Weil

Provided by Church Divinity School of the Pacific The Rev. Dr. Louis Weil, Episcopal priest and preeminent liturgical theologian, died March 9 in Oakland, CA, after several months of failing health and a brief illness. He was 86 years old. Weil is perhaps best known for his influential role in shaping the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Each year the Madrasa-Midrasha Program offers summer research grants for students working on interreligious projects related to Judaism and Islam, funded through generous support by the Walter & Elise Haas Fund. Grants typically range from $250 to $500 for individual projects and $500 to $1000 for joint projects. Colloquia Series

Each semester, the Madrasa-Midrasha Program sponsors a Colloquia Series featuring conversations between faculty at the Graduate Theological Union and the University of California, Berkeley. These monthly gatherings cover many topics with areas of focus including pedagogy, Jewish education and Islamic education, spiritual care, health care and chaplaincy, Antisemitism and Islamophobia, and addressing questions of diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion. The final MM Colloquia Series gathering in Spring 2022 featured a Faculty Colloquia Public Forum that was free and open to the public.
