Cogen Bohanec holds an MA in Buddhist Studies from the Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS), and a PhD in Historical and Cultural Studies of Religion (Hindu emphasis) from the Center for Dharma Studies (CDS), both at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU), Berkeley, CA. Dr. Bohanec is Associate Faculty in Hindu Studies and Sustainability at the GTU where he teaches graduate courses in South Asian Culture & Religions, and Sanskrit language and research. He has also taught courses in Asian Humanities and Religions, World Religions, and Classical Humanities at American River College in Sacramento.

His research emphasizes Comparative Dharma Studies—using interreligious and interdisciplinary approaches to show the convergences and divergences between the Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, and Yoga traditions of India. His forthcoming book is “A Bhakti Psychology of Emotions and Ethics” features an emphasis on systematic Hindu theology and ethics. He has a variety of publications in Jain, Hindu, and Buddhist studies. Dr. Bohanec has authored and published numerous articles and chapters of edited volumes including “A Dialogical Encounter between Christian Ecotheological Ethics and Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava Theology” (2021), “Bhaktivedānta Swami and Buddhism: A Case Study for Interfaith Dialogue and Peacebuilding” (2021), “Semiotics and Illocution in Gauḍīya Sādhana” (2020), “Ecotheology, Animal Rights, and the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam” (2018), and “Pan-Dharmic Yoga: Comparative Meditative Praxis in the Jain Yoga-Śāstra of Hemacandra and the Hindu Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali,” amongst others. Forthcoming publications include “Ecology & Indian Philosophy” (with R. Sherma), “Contemplative Studies and Buddhism: Meditation, Devotion, Prayer, and Worship” (with R. Sherma), and “Comparative Buddhist and Hindu Brahmavihāra Praxis: A Comparison between the Visuddhimagga and the Yoga Sūtra.” He is an Assistant Editor of the Journal of Dharma Studies, and has been an editor on a variety of other academic publications in the field of Dharma studies.
