Visiting Scholars at the GTU

For more than a decade, the GTU has offered its Visiting Scholar program to faculty from academic institutions who are visiting temporarily in the area and who are not employed locally either by the GTU or any other institution as well as to GTU alumni. The program is intended to enable and facilitate the research projects of those involved which could not be done otherwise.  Visiting Scholars are granted full privileges at the GTU's Flora Lamson Hewlett Library and access to the libraries at the University of California, Berkeley. Student Lounge

All students are invited and encouraged to use the GTU Student Lounge. This lounge space is located on the first floor of the GTU Le Conte Building (2465 Le Conte Avenue). The lounge is available from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday when the GTU is in session.

The Graduate Theological Union proudly supports the research and teaching of our current students. The Student Travel grant and Newhall Awards are available for GTU doctoral students. All GTU students (doctoral and MA) are eligible to apply for the Interreligious Collaborative Research Projects and Chan Essay Prize. Parking and Transportation

As with housing, parking is at a premium in Berkeley.  All parking near the GTU is either metered or requires a residential permit in order to park for more than two hours.  If you must drive, try to carpool and be prepared to park at some distance and walk.  (Remember that we are located on a hill.)  If you can take public transportation, we encourage you to do so. The GTU boasts one of the largest contingents of female theology students and alumnae in the country. Housing

Most students live "off campus" in apartments and homes in Berkeley and neighboring communities. Several GTU member schools own apartment buildings and dormitories, both in Berkeley and elsewhere. Member schools house their M.Div. students first, and then rent to M.A. and Ph.D./Th.D. students as space is available.  Most likely you will need to wait until mid-summer to receive definite notice from a school regarding the availability of its housing.  Some schools give preference to students who have affiliated* with them. GTU Student Travel Grant: Students who have papers accepted for the program of the Annual Meeting of the AAR, SBL, or other comparable national meeting or conference may compete in the GTU's Student Travel Grant competition.
