Berkeley, CA - September 4, 2018 The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) is pleased to announce that Gregory E. Sterling (PhD, ’90) has been selected as the GTU’s 2018 Alumnus of the Year. Dr. Sterling is the Reverend Henry L. Slack Dean of Yale Divinity School, where he also serves as Lillian Claus Professor of New Testament.
Before assuming the deanship at Yale Divinity School in 2012, Dr. Sterling taught theology for more than twenty years on the faculty at the University of Notre Dame, where he also served as the first dean of the independent Graduate School from 2008 to 2012.
A New Testament scholar with a specialty in Hellenistic Judaism, Dr. Sterling is the author or editor of seven books and more than seventy articles. Most recently, he was coeditor of Scripture and Social Justice: Catholic and Ecumenical Essays (Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, 2018). He is also the general editor for the Philo of Alexandria Commentary Series (E.J. Brill) and coeditor of the Studia Philonica Annual, and served for twenty years as editor of the Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity Series (University of Notre Dame Press). His research has focused on the writings of Philo of Alexandria, Josephus, and Luke-Acts, with an emphasis on interactions between Second Temple Jews and early Christians, as well as on the way these groups related to the Greco-Roman world.
GTU Dean Uriah Y. Kim celebrated Sterling’s selection as alumnus of the year. “Dr. Gregory Sterling is a renowned New Testament scholar with nearly three decades of academic leadership as a professor and dean at two of the nation’s most highly regarded universities. The GTU is extremely pleased to count Dr. Sterling among its graduates, and to recognize him as our 2018 alumnus of the year.”
