Chair of the Board of Trustees, William D. Glenn and his Spouse, Prescott W. Hafner, Pledge $100K to GTU

BERKELEY, CA – December 16, 2022 – The Graduate Theological Union is pleased to announce that Board Chair William D. Glenn and his spouse, Prescott W. Hafner, have pledged $100,000 to the GTU over the next five years. This pledge builds upon an initial commitment of $50,000, offered in celebration of the GTU’s 60th anniversary.

“My husband and I are proud to invest in the GTU and have been grateful to be members of the broader GTU community for nearly forty-five years,” Mr. Glenn said. “It is one of those rare forces that actually has the power to bring people together to create a more just and loving world. I have often described the GTU as sacred ground, peopled by individuals who are working toward the greater good. We are honored to be able to contribute to the future of such a remarkable and necessary institution.”

This substantial pledge increase recognizes the achievement of a number of milestones in 2022 as the GTU concludes its first 18 months of implementing its visionary 5-Year Strategic Plan. The gift will support the GTU’s unrestricted operating funds, helping the institution to meet its goal of reducing its reliance on endowments in forthcoming years.

“This year, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the GTU, a milestone which has allowed us to take stock of our institution’s incredibly rich legacy, and also to think about how we take that forward for the next 60 years,” said Uriah Kim, GTU President. “This generous gift is helping to build the firm foundation we need to continue implementation of our strategic plan and ensure that the GTU remains a vibrant force for years to come.”

GTU 2.0 is the institution’s five-year strategic vision that was launched in 2021, focused on critical areas of impact including expanding education access; optimizing infrastructure to best serve students, staff, faculty, and the broader community; and supporting the next generation of scholars and leaders.
