GTU Postdoctoral Fellowship in East Asian Art and Religion
The Graduate Theological Union (GTU), the most comprehensive center for the graduate study of religion in North America, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in East Asian Art and Religion. This 2-year teaching and curatorial appointment is open to junior scholars, with preference given to candidates not yet in tenure track positions who would particularly contribute to and benefit from a residency in the GTU’s interreligious and interdisciplinary community.
Located in Berkeley, California, the GTU provides a unique community where scholars and practitioners from across the world's great religions gather for academic study of their own and of other traditions and disciplines. The GTU is engaged in a variety of collaborative projects with the University of California, Berkeley (3 blocks away), including library privileges to augment those of the GTU’s Flora Lamson Hewlett Library, one of the largest and most comprehensive theological libraries in North America.
The fellowship is open to all scholars, national and international, who meet eligibility requirements. International scholars outside of North America would be appointed under a J-1 visa (Research Scholar status); candidates holding an H-1B visa are unfortunately ineligible (no exceptions can be made).
The Fellowship carries an annual stipend of $56,000 plus single-coverage health insurance, and a housing allowance of $1,000/mo.
Requirements:
• The applicant must demonstrate scholarly expertise in East Asian art/visual culture and religion.
• The PhD must be in hand, or defense passed, by the time of application. Only scholars who are within three years of receiving their doctorate are eligible. The PhD may be in art history, religious studies, or an allied field.
• The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough understanding of at least one religious tradition and a broad knowledge of the relevant art history.
• Ability to conduct research in one or more East Asian languages is mandatory.
• The Fellow is required to spend both academic years (late August– late May) in- residence in Berkeley.
Duties:
• The Fellow will develop and teach two courses each year.
• The Fellow will curate or co-curate an exhibition in the GTU’s Center for the Arts & Religion (CARe) Doug Adams Gallery.
• The Fellow will organize a conference related to an active research project.
• The Fellow will participate in GTU departmental and faculty meetings and CARe programs.
