A conversation with Dr. Cline on the Spiritual Exercises,
facilitated by Dean Kevin O'Brien, SJ

Erin M. Cline, Associate Professor of Theology at Georgetown University, presents her new
book, A World on Fire: Sharing the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises with Other Religions, and entertains
questions and discussion. She discusses the question of why the Spiritual Exercises should be adapted
for members of other religions, exploring different theological justifications for this practice, as well as the
more difficult question of how the full and complete Exercises would best be adapted for those from other
faith traditions. Giving close attention to the specific challenges involved in giving the Ignatian Spiritual
Exercises to those from non-Abrahamic traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism,
Prof. Cline takes up the challenge of sharing the gifts of the Exercises even with those who are not
theists.
