HIV/AIDS Ministry: Past & Present

Tuesday, May 26th 2020, 5:00pm to 7:00pm
Online Event, 2400 Ridge Rd Berkeley, CA 94709

CARe has partnered up with the organization Reimagine: End of Life to take part in their groundbreaking worldwide Virtual Festival to offer a way of embracing life, facing death, and loving fully, during COVID-19. Reimagine: Life, Loss, & Love provides a platform for institutions and individuals around the globe to come together and reflect on the realities of our day-to-day.

Join CARe on Zoom for a panel discussion presented in conjunction with our Spring 2020 exhibition, AFTER/LIFE, which features the work of Ed Aulerich-Sugai and Mark Mitchell. Both of these innovative and inspiring artists were affected by HIV/AIDS, leading to Ed's death in 1994.

Our diverse group of accomplished panelists will discuss spirituality, ministry, and community in the days when AIDS was first recognized and in more recent times.

Moderated by Dr. Bernard Schlager (Executive Director, CGLS), our panelists are: Bishop Yvette A. Flunder (City of Refuge UCC), Rabbi Jane Litman (Jewish Roundtable, CLGS and Rabbi, Chico Havurah), the Rev. Elder Jim Mitulski (Interim Pastor, Island United Church UCC, Foster City and AIDS activist), and Steven Tierney (Professor Emeritus, counseling psychology, California Institute of Integral Studies, and Clinical Director, Seeds of Awareness, Oakland).

Please RSVP on Zoom or email care@gtu.edu to be given access to the Zoom link!

Read a reflection by one of our panelists, Rabbi Jane Litman, on their experience caring for congregants at the height of the AIDS epidemic.
