An Educational Approach to Fostering Emotional Integration in Traumatized Children

Trauma in children can manifest in out-of-control behaviors that look to adults like “misbehaving” or “tantrums.” This webinar will present the perspective that the behaviors are caused by the child having feelings too big to handle alone and there are ways that adults can respond that can help the child. This shift in adult thinking can in itself be helpful to the child-adult relationship. The three modalities for adult response to children who are overwhelmed by their feelings are:
Comfort the child
Play with the child
Put the child’s feelings into words

These modalities can promote emotional integration of experience. The webinar will include presentation of an educational tool developed by Dr. Kohner for children and parents to experience together to promote emotional integration. Descriptions of use of the approach will be provided.

Panelists:

Claudia Kohner, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice. She has a particular interest in helping adults to help children integrate their emotional experience. She has developed an illustrated book and app that are educational tools to help adults respond to out-of-control behavior in young children in ways that are designed to promote emotional integration.

Moderator:

Kamal Abu-Shamsieh is Director of the Interreligious Chaplaincy Program (ICP) and Assistant Professor of Practical Theology at the GTU. He founded Ziraya Muslim Spiritual Care and extensively traveled internationally to train chaplains in primarily Arab and Muslim countries. Since 2012, he has served as a chaplain at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. He completed four clinical pastoral education units (CPE) at Stanford Hospital and a Certificate in Palliative Care Chaplaincy from California State University Institute for Palliative Care. He completed a Ph.D. at the Graduate Theological Union in 2019 where he examined Prophet Muhammad's dying experience as a good death model for an Islamic practical theology for end-of-life care.
