As Baby Boomers face their own issues with aging, caring for the needs of their parents bring its own unique challenge. What are the ways that congregations can best provide care and community for these “pillars” of the church? While heterosexual contemporaries may have children or other family units to provide support in later years, what happens to the LGBT individuals who have been estranged from their family? Hear stories of hope and challenge from members of the senior community and those who provide services for them.

This screening is a part of the PSR Earl Lectures and Leadership Conference. La Mission is a moving portrayal of redemption, transformation and family struggle. Written and directed by Peter Bratt, the film premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival (official selection).

Hate crimes based on sexual orientation account for 20% of all hate crimes reported to the FBI in recent years and violence against the transgender community continues at an appalling rate as well. We know that anti-gay religious voices contribute to creating a climate that allows these terrifying crimes to continue at high rates. Many faith leaders, however, are firm in our commitment that all people deserve to live in safety and freedom and that violence is never the appropriate response to our differences.

All are welcome to join us for a brief program, refreshments, and an opportunity to view the work of students in the Sexuality in Sacred Art class.

How did the idea of “nuclear family” emerge as the dominant paradigm when so many of our historic and scriptural models present alternative arrangements? How do our concepts of racial identity, sexuality, and gender influence how we approach our familial roles?

Preach It! is a preaching festival highlighting student preachers from the Graduate Theological Union. Six different categories will each feature six preachers. The day will culminate with a Preach-Off featuring one student from each group. Student preachers will be assessed by panels of homiletic professors and Bay area pastors.
