2007 Alum of the Year

Dr. Bernard Adeney-Risakotta is Director of Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS), the first cooperative interreligious Ph.D. program in Indonesia.  The program is sponsored by three leading universities — Gadjah Mada University, State Islamic University, and Duta Wacana Christian University.  Prior to opening the program in 2007, Dr. Adeney-Risakotta has been a professor of ethics and religion in Indonesia for sixteen years, helping to create academic and community programs that strengthen relationships among different religions in a predominantly Muslim country.

Prior to his work in Indonesia, Dr. Adeney-Risakotta taught courses at the Graduate Theological Union, New College of Berkeley, Pacific School of Religion, American Baptist Seminary of the West, and Fuller Theological Seminary. He also directed a cross-cultural ministry program and served as interim dean of New College of Berkeley.

During the Graduate Theological Union alumni luncheon at this year's AAR Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA, Dr. Bernard Adeney-Risakotta received the 2007 Alum of the Year award for his outstanding work in the field of religion, reflecting the GTU mantra of interreligious studies, and promoting scholarly endeavors.

Each year an alumnus/a of the GTU is honored by being chosen the Alum of the Year. Over the years, these distinguished alumni have been involved in activities around the world, from teaching and scholarship to social justice work and museum directing. Wherever they are, they bring to their work a passion for crossing traditional boundaries and creating connection and dialogue.
