The Graduate Theological Union’s Flora Lamson Hewlett Library, one of the most comprehensive theological libraries in the world, is also a global village serving current and future parish ministers, seminary educators, scholars, and community leaders. Located on “Holy Hill” in Berkeley, California, its mission is to develop and maintain resources of superior quality for teaching, learning, and research in the disciplines of religion and theology for both professional and academic degree programs.
At the crossroads of interdisciplinary scholarship, the library is the geographic and spiritual heart of the GTU. Founded in 1969 from historical original collections brought together from the GTU’s individual member schools, the library reflects the ecumenical and interreligious collaboration that takes place on Holy Hill. The collection has not only the breadth to support a full range of theological education programs, but also considerable depth in many areas of religion and theological inquiry. San Francisco Theological Seminary, one of the GTU’s member schools, houses a separate branch of the library on its San Anselmo campus.
The Hewlett Library is based on the original drawings by famed architect Louis I. Kahn. It is a work of modern architecture at its finest – spacious, light-filled, and bold, yet integrated into its surroundings.
